5th Grade Newsletter: November 16, 2015

W
Wednesday is the final day for our shoeboxes for Operation Christmas Child.  We are continuing to learn about Jacob’s transformation.

Science We begin our new chapter not on states of matter, yet; but we begin our study on “Fossils and Dinosaurs.”  In History, we begin our study of chapter three, which is based on the ancient Middle East, focusing on how they dwelled and their lives.  The Passport Test is coming up next week.

Math lessons will be on dividing with zeros in the quotient, larger-small-difference stories, using fraction manipulatives, and drawing segments to close in an area.

Language Arts We have amazing “co-”authors.  Their final chapters were creative, imaginative, unique, flowing, engaging, organized, starting and/or ending with a bang, brought laughter, evoked sadness or happiness, and connected the reader to the writer with their ideas and content and through a variety of sentences composed of expressive and/or vivid words.

Spelling We are learning about words with the diphthongs oi, oy, ou, and ow.  Also in Vocabulary, we continue our study of words relating to climbing a mountain through creating phrases (section A), substituting a phrase or word (section B), and word meaning study (section C).

Reading We shall continue our reading of The Tale of Despereaux, through the eyes of another character, Roscuro, a rat. For M.U.G. (Mechanics, Usage, and Grammar), we continue our study on quotations.  Also, for independent reading, keep reading anything you enjoy to broaden your love of reading.  As noted in my first newsletter, devote at least 20 minutes to reading a novel around the fifth grade for the purpose of getting introduced or familiar with content learned.  If you see any words that are from our vocabulary lists, you may get a ticket to earn those class prizes and rewards.

THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR ALL YOU DO!!!
Have a blessed week, Ms. Chang
