Chang’s Future Leaders: Newsletter Feb. 23-27

Chang’s Future Leaders: Newsletter Feb. 23-27

Nerf night was exciting.  The kids had a blast, playing organized sports, eating yummy food and ice cream, and just having a great time with friends.
Pre-registration packets were sent home.  Please review them and let us know what your plans are for next year!

What we are learning…
Bible Verse We are continuing to learn from Israel’s seven cycles of rebellion (of immorality, idolatry, and intermarriage with the Canaanites), bondage, repentance, and rescue of a mighty, gracious, and patient God in the book of Judges.
The Bible memory verse for this week is Romans 12:1-2.

History The first section of the current chapter on “Countries of the Far East” revealed the amazing country of China and their inventions, adventures, and famous people and goods, for example, silk and porcelain.  We continue our study on China, concerning more modern times.

Science  The “Weather” chapter displays the fine balance of the layers of the atmosphere and how each serves different functions and contains different elements.  We are moving into the section of “Moving Air.”

Math Test 14 will be on Tuesday.
Reading Keep log of the monthly reading calendars.  Also, the novel, Bud, Not Buddy shows his resilience and humor through each challenge.

Language Arts Complete the spelling handouts for Spelling and Wordly Wise.  Prepare for the tests this Wednesday.  We are learning more about how to use commas for interjections, interruptions, separating items in dates and addresses through the wonderful text…Write Source

Writing We have begun our poetry projects this week!  They are already creative and full of their ingenuity.  Listening to them create their “Alphabet Alliteration” poems were so cute, some truly made me laugh.  Please see my blog if you would like to view the full packet!

Chang’s Future Leaders: Newsletter Feb. 16-20

Chang’s Future Leaders: Newsletter Feb. 16-20
What a wonderful time we had with our grandparents!  We got to mingle with our little icebreaker with questions like what is our favorite ice-cream flavor or who is our favorite super hero; see if we really are smarter than a fifth grader; share and eat sweet Valentine's Day treats; and be catered by the PTA with snacks and love.  Community Christian Academy is truly a comm-unity that is Christ-like by example while excelling in academics.

What we are learning…
Bible Verse  We will be memorizing two to three verses at-a-time each week of Romans 12.  You may go to my blog (below) for the breakdown and verses.   The words have been highlighted and bolded to group the verses that you need to memorize. Also, we are embarking on a new unit (10.1-10.4), “God Uses Judges.”  The Bible lesson tests for a unit will be a day after each _.4 lesson.
Romans 12:1-2.

History We are continuing on with the chapters on “Countries of the Far East” and, in Science ,  “Weather.”  Health For this Friday, be prepared for the quiz on “Quiz” workbook pages 35-36.

Math Test 14 is on Thursday. As stated last newsletter, remember to use your Math textbook as a “manual” by going through the beginning explanation. Also, we do look at all the homework problems and not only the assigned ones since homework alternates between odds (MWF) and evens (TR): Problems not assigned may not be seen until a test or two later.
Reading Keep log of the monthly reading calendars.  Also, the novel, Bud, Not Buddy is getting interesting through the uncertainties he faces.  Language Arts Complete the spelling handouts for Spelling and Wordly Wise.  Prepare for the tests next Wednesday.  By using Write Source, we will continue to focus on conventions of grammar, usage, and mechanics (G.U.M.) that seem difficult as evidenced in our writing.

Writing We will begin our poetry projects this week.  Please see my blog for more details!  We have the opportunity to make a book for $20; the authors and illustrators are our very own children.  If interested, payment will be due Friday.  Our book will be a collection of poetry from “My Poetry Book” project.

Grandparents' Day Festivities

What a wonderful time we had with our grandparents and friends!  We got to mingle with our little icebreaker with questions like what is our favorite ice-cream flavor or who our favorite super hero is; see if we really are smarter than a fifth grader; share and eat sweet Valentine's Day treats; and be catered by the PTA with snacks and love.

Wordly Wise 11E--Answers for 1-5

For those who did not leave early, I provided the answers.  However, to those who left early, I have directly emailed the answers to the parent's/guardian's email.  Please check your email.  Thank you!

Great News...I would like to inform you that we will not be having our usual spelling or Wordly Wise homework and tests due this Wednesday.  It will be for the following Wednesday (2/25).  Please enjoy your time together!

Romans 12:1-21 (NIV)

We will be memorizing the whole chapter two to three verses at-a-time each week.  The words have been highlighted and bolded to group the verses that you need to memorize.

A Living Sacrifice

12 Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship. Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.

Humble Service in the Body of Christ

For by the grace given me I say to every one of you: Do not think of yourself more highly than you ought, but rather think of yourself with sober judgment, in accordance with the faith God has distributed to each of you. For just as each of us has one body with many members, and these members do not all have the same function, so in Christ we, though many, form one body, and each member belongs to all the others. We have different gifts, according to the grace given to each of us. If your gift is prophesying, then prophesy in accordance with your faith; if it is serving, then serve; if it is teaching, then teach; if it is to encourage, then give encouragement; if it is giving, then give generously; if it is to lead, do it diligently; if it is to show mercy, do it cheerfully.

Love in Action

Love must be sincere. Hate what is evil; cling to what is good. 10 Be devoted to one another in love. Honor one another above yourselves. 11 Never be lacking in zeal, but keep your spiritual fervor, serving the Lord. 12 Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer. 13 Share with the Lord’s people who are in need. Practice hospitality.
14 Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse. 15 Rejoice with those who rejoice; mourn with those who mourn. 16 Live in harmony with one another. Do not be proud, but be willing to associate with people of low position. Do not be conceited.
17 Do not repay anyone evil for evil. Be careful to do what is right in the eyes of everyone. 18 If it is possible, as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone. 19 Do not take revenge, my dear friends, but leave room for God’s wrath, for it is written: “It is mine to avenge; I will repay,” says the Lord. 20 On the contrary:
“If your enemy is hungry, feed him;
if he is thirsty, give him something to drink.
In doing this, you will heap burning coals on his head.”

21 Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.

Chang’s Future Leaders: Newsletter Feb. 2-6

What we are learning…

Bible Verse 1 Samuel 12:20 (NIV): “Do not be afraid,” Samuel replied. “You have done all this evil; yet do not turn away from the Lord, but serve the Lord with all your heart.”

History
Study guides for the chapters, “Countries of Central and Southern Asia” and Science ’s “Heat and Energy,” have been given.  Keep reviewing for the tests on Thursday and Friday, respectively.  Health Keep reviewing “Quiz” pages 35-36.  The quiz has been pushed to next Friday.

Reading/Writing
Graphic organizers are helpful tools to visually organize information, and we have been using them (i.e. T-Chart, Venn diagram) and will continue to use them (i.e. timeline, pie, and graph) for the class novel to unearth pertinent details. Also, the monthly reading calendar is due tomorrow.

Language Arts Complete the spelling handouts for Spelling and Wordly Wise.  Prepare for the tests this Wednesday.  We have been learning how to use punctuation (end marks and commas) correctly, using Write Source.

Math
The slowing down to re-explore math concepts have been quite fruitful and will help with the re-take Math Test (12).

Fieldtrip:
Thank you for your prayers, and for all the adults who joined us to make this field trip memorable and safe!  We were awed by glass art, created by high-risk middle school students; expressed our feelings through making art in the craft room; watched the glass blowers make a doggy dish at the Hot Shop; learned how heat and metal tools are used to blow glass; then, ended with some (eye) shopping in their glittering, gleaming, glass-filled gift shop.
To end, we met Chuck-E-Cheese, ate pizza, played games, won prizes, and cooled down with ice-cream.  Good times learning while having fun!

Fennell Fundraiser: Each class will be collecting money to help.  Donators will be given a “We love Mrs. Fennell” body decal (face, arm, hand).
