Newsletter October 20th

Library visit: This Wednesday bring your books for renewal or returning.

Art: Bring your Paper Bag book project to decorate for art class next Monday.

School Carnival is this Friday! Due to family, I will not be able to help with the carnival. Yet, our booth of bouncing ping pong balls into cups will still be functioning if we have volunteers to help. One parent has graciously offered time. If you are able to volunteer for 30 minutes or more, please sign up (email or sign-up near the door).

Homework: Some have brought to my attention that homework has been taking much time to complete. Hence, I will be vigilant in containing the amount of time spent on daily homework. As Mr. Graham shared with all the teachers in the beginning of the school year, studies have shown that too much homework can be counter-productive: If overwhelming, homework can have an adverse or negative affect on learning. The goal is to make homework productive; therefore, 50 minutes should be the time spent on homework…ten minutes for each grade level.

Understandably, not every student completes his or her work at the same rate and from an identical level of understanding. Yet, the goal this quarter will be for the students to complete at least half of their homework assignments in class. Therefore, please encourage your child to keep on-task, listen to direct instruction, ask questions, and note-take while we are working on homework instruction in class. Thankfully, most students are on-task and not being a distraction or being distracted.

What we are learning …

Bible Lessons on “Joseph Forgives” will be continued; “Moses Serves God” will begin. This week we have two Bible memory verses—one from last week will be tested today and this week’s will be tested Friday.

Math Test 5 (of lessons 21-25) will be tested Tuesday. Lessons 27-31 will continue to use principals from the previous ones.

History “Ancient Middle East” chapter and their sections will be studied: where history began; homes of ancient times; daily life in ancient city; the people (Phoenicians, Hittites, Lydians, and Israelites), and the empires (Assyrian, Babylonian, and Persian).

Science “Fossils and Dinosaurs” will be studied using independent reading, quick check, and Q&A games. The sections include fossil formation, two ways of looking at fossils, learning from fossils, and dinosaurs.

Health The open-book chapter test on the Heart and the Circulatory system will be Friday.

Reading Continue independently reading 20 min. daily and recording on your monthly reading log. We have worked on the book project panel-by-panel in class for Brother Andrew: God's Secret Agent. They will continue working in class, referring to the novel and myself. Once we have completed each part of the project, the students may take their rough draft, written and drawn portions, home for editing and final drafting.  The final project will be due Tuesday, October 28th.

Spelling and Vocabulary (Worldly Wise) activities and tests are Wednesday’s (see back).
