5th Grade Newsletter: DECEMBER 14, 2015

B
ible Christmas is fast approaching!  We know that the busy-ness of the holidays can keep our thoughts wrapped up in the presents and traditions, lending to the frenzy; however, we have and will not lose sight of the true meaning of Christmas—the birth and coming of our Savior, Christ Jesus!  Please enjoy our “12 Days of Christmas” rendition from our very own class (see end), reviewing what we have learned in Bible, thus, far.

Adopt-a Family spots are being taken.  WOW!  I would like to thank all of those who have donated items. We will be wrapping them up on the 17th for delivery on the 18th.  The remaining items listed are the following: 15-year-old Girl—shoes (10) and bike; 10-year-old Girl—shoes (7) and bike; anything would be grateful for mom; and anything warm for dad.

Reading For further study of The Tale of Desperaux, we created a Venn diagram for the similarities and differences of two similar characters from the novel.  Also, we are plotting the events of a chronological timeline for three main characters: Despereaux, Roscuro, and Miggery Sow.

Math lessons will be on reading lengths on a metric scale, reading an inch ruler to the nearest fourth of an inch, and illustrating fraction stories.

Language Arts Last week, we created the “Five Senses,” “Haiku,” and “Who-What-When-Where-Why” poems. This week will be writing out a poem from the Bible and starting to write our final drafts, one-to-two-poems-at-a-time.  Mechanics, Usage, and Grammar (M.U.G.) We will use dashes and parentheses in sentences.  Spelling This week we will be reviewing lessons 7-11, so there is no cursive.  In Vocabulary, we are playing catch up and will take the chapter 6 test. Also, we will slowly transition to having spelling and vocabulary worksheets due on Tuesdays and the tests on Wednesdays.

Science With the help of the Wade family, we made casts both edible (melted chocolate and marshmallows) and non-edible (plaster of Paris) from Christmas molds.  We completed our chapter review and will continue to complete our study guides for the chapter test on “Fossils and Dinosaurs.”  Our next FIELD TRIP on Monday, January 25th, 2016 is to view the National Geographic Live! presentation of Spinosaurus: Lost Giant of the Cretaceous with Nizar Ibrahim.  Bring a sack lunch, and do not order a hot lunch for this day.  Also, there is limited seating, five more chaperones may join us.

In History, we have completed our reading and getting ready for the test of the third chapter by finishing up our study guides.  The Passport test is on Thursday.

THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR ALL YOU DO!!!
Have a blessed week, Mrs. Chang
