Sub-Zero Photos and Video

We thoroughly enjoyed the visit from Sub-Zero who delivered us not only ice cream but also an educational, experience experimenting with liquid nitrogen.

We had a taste of our upcoming unit--states of matter, literally. Compliments to a gracious and generous parent, Sub-Zero, an ice cream vendor, who came to us and gave us hands-on experiments of the effects of nitrogen on solids (gummy bears, a rose, slick desks, and his hands) and water (itself) and gas (air in a balloon). The experience was a blast, literally, as well. We had balloons pop and ice cream tantalize not only our taste buds but also our brain cells as we watched it being made right before our eyes with nitrogen.

5th Grade Newsletter: November 9, 2015

ast week, for Bible, we have until next Wednesday to share a gift to a child who may only experience this one gift this whole year. What an honor to share in the ability to bless someone with the love of Christ. Thank you to all who are praying for these boys and girls and their families. We have concluded our study of Abraham’s trusting and obeying God and have progressed in our studies to learn about Jacob’s transformation.

For Science, we had a taste of our next unit--states of matter, literally. This week we shall review and take the chapter test on “Minerals and Rocks,” Thursday.

In History, we have finished our study of the Fertile Crescent and their peoples. We are reviewing for the test next week of chapters one and two.

Math lessons were on geometry of lines, which parallel, intersect and run perpendicular; draw angles; and round numbers using a number line.

For Reading and Language Arts, the students are presenting their “co-authored” final chapter of Esperanza Rising as how they would imagine it to end. Simultaneously, we continue our reading of another novel. This historical fiction is set during the medieval era in the king’s castle through the eyes of a mouse in The Tale of Despereaux. For M.U.G. (Mechanics, Usage, and Grammar), we continue our study on hyphens. In Spelling, we are learning about words with o that sound like au in automobile. Also in Vocabulary, we are reviewing the past words learnt from previous chapters through word puzzles.

5th Grade Newsletter: November 2, 2015

ast week, for Bible, our class did a splendid job sharing their talents and passion for God on stage. One hundred percent participation from students and teachers will enable us to reach our 200 packed boxes goal! Thank you to all parents who came and who supported our crew! They truly gave it their all and for the glory of God. Each group shared a part to fully support the why we do Operation Christmas Child, which can be found in James 1:27:

“Religion that is pure and undefiled before God, the Father, is this: to visit orphans and widows in their affliction, and to keep oneself unstained from the world.”

For Science, we visited our very own, historically acclaimed Mount Saint Helen’s. We had a great time identifying rocks and their characteristics, learning about the rejuvenation of life from the catastrophic eruption, and seeing God’s omniscient and omnipotence of how He can bring back life and beauty from utter catastrophe an devastation. Thank you to all the parents who joined us on the trip, making it a more memorable and safe one!

In History, we are continuing to learn about the creative, industrious, and ingenious Sumerians with the invention of the wheel and writing.

Math lessons were on “Practicing the division Algorithm,” Solving Problems about Divisions of Time,” “Reading and Drawing Number Lines, Part 2,” and “Reading and Writing Time from a Clock,”

For Language Arts and Reading, we are fine-tuning our skills each day to complete our rough drafts for the final chapter of Esperanza Rising, MUG (Mechanics, Usage, and Grammar) on apostrophes, Spelling, and Vocabulary.
